Born in Caldwell, he lived in Morristown prior to moving to Sparta in 1984. He was a Vietnam War-era veteran of the US Air Force, serving as a radio cryptographer. He graduated from Middlesex County College and Rutgers University.
Woody had a 32-year career with the County of Morris, primarily involved in long-range land use planning. He was instrumental in developing the county’s geographic information and mapping system and served over the years as a planner and as director of the Department of Information Technology, among other positions. He retired in 2011. A member of the Lake Mohawk Country Club, he loved to play golf and was an avid Yankees baseball fan.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Dianne; their daughter, Elizabeth Sommers, of Newton; a granddaughter, Darthy Sommers; two sisters, Stephanie Nagy, of New Hope, Pa., and Carolyn Malone, and her husband, Larry, of Deming, N.M.; two nieces, Jeanne Feiner, and her husband, Christopher, of North Brunswick, and their children Jessica and Ross, and Grace Dickerman and her husband, Jeff, of Pampa, Texas; and his sister-in-law and her husband, Patricia and William Schupp, of Sparta. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Seymour “Cy” and Frances Sommer.
