Val came from very simple beginnings in Ball Creek, Arkansas. She was born in a single room cabin without electricity or running water with her sister along with her brothers deep in the mountains. Her family moved out West to California when she was a child. As a teen she fell in love with, and married Harry Shipley. They stayed in love and together, for 53 wonderful years. When he passed away in 2005, her love was no longer by her side. Val’s strength and deep spiritual beliefs kept her going.
Nursing was her profession. Although, she would be quick to tell you being a mother is the most important job there is. Her family meant everything to her. And she reared 4 wonderful children.
She was very supportive to Harry and his executive position with Western Electric. She entertained as needed, in the spur of the moment. However, Val was very spiritual and she was most comfortable just wearing shorts, quilting, tending to her critters, working in her gardens, enjoying nature, wildlife, gardening, canning and most of all spending time with family.
Preceded in death by her husband, Harry Shipley, parents Cara Esta (Ball) Edens and Bob Edens, grandparents, Henry Harvey Ball, Lillian Maudeacy Rogers, Simeon Patton Edens and Ruth Della Brim and her granddaughter Elisha Gareau. She is survived by her son Stephen Shipley, daughters, Sherry Grassadonia, Cherie Greenwald and Kimberly Reese, brother, Simie Elige Edens, sister, Loraine Shipley, 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
