He was born in Troy, NH, August 29, 1931, the son of Matilda and John Matson. He grew up in Troy, attending local schools.
Mr. Matson was an Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict achieving the rank of corporal.
Following his military obligations, he resided in Fitzwilliam for a brief time before moving to Keene. While residing in Fitzwilliam, he was a town police officer and he wound the clock in the town hall steeple, a responsibility he especially enjoyed.
He worked for 20 years as a machinist with Kingsbury Corporation of Keene. He later worked for 20 years as a truck driver, first with Scenic State Oil and later with the Cheshire Oil Company of Keene.
Mr. Matson served with the Keene Fire Department Deluge Hose Call Company from October 10, 1966 until November 11, 1986 attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He was a member of the Gordon Bissell American Legion Post #4 and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 799, both of Keene.
His favorite pastime was running the roads, often ending with lunch somewhere along his travels. He also enjoyed camping and being with his family, his many friends, and his dog, Sadie.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Catherine M. (Thompson) Matson of Keene; his children, Alexander W. “Buddy” Matson, Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Roxbury, NH, Patricia Matson and her fiancé, Douglas Kendall, of Keene, Martha Landry and her husband, David, of Geneva, IL; nine grandchildren, Alexander W. Matson, III and his wife, Michelle, Craig Matson, Lisa Bowman, Catherine Souther and her husband, David, Dirk Bowman, Paige Landry, Jack Landry, Nicolas Landry, Hannah Landry; six great-grandchildren, Alexander W. Matson, IV, Caleb Matson, Lauren Kendall, Rachel Malcom, Ethan Malcom, Miranda Souther; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings.
A graveside service will be held in the spring in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Fitzwilliam, NH. Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.
