Mr. Robert H. Barstow Sr., age 93 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at the Mercy Health Care Center in Tupper Lake, NY. There will be a burial at a time and date yet to be determined at the Bayside Cemetery in Potsdam, NY. Mr. Barstow is survived by his wife of 70 years Helen Barstow; his son Robert H. (Denise) Barstow of Cranberry Lake, NY; 4 grandchildren Rachelle (Bill) Biebel, Amanda (Brad) Reif, William (Christine) Barstow and Rebecca (Thomas) Barnes; and 5 great grandchildren.
Robert H. Barstow Sr. was born November 29, 1919 in Massena NY to the late Carle R. and Jane M. Merrihew Barstow. He was a 1938 graduate of Massena Central High School and Albany Business College. He was married to Helen F. Powers on September 20, 1942 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Massena, NY. He then entered the United States Army. He served in the 812th Tank Destroyer Battalion during WWII from 1942-1946. He served in England, France, Germany and Belgium.
After returning home from the service he went into business with his brother Roy Barstow in Potsdam. They began selling Dodge vehicles and International Tractors and farm equipment. They eventually ended up switching to Ford then General Motors vehicles. Robert retired in 1987, but continued to remain active with the business by delivering registration to the DMV in Massena until 2008.
Robert was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Potsdam; he was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Massena and he was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Potsdam.
