Born September 6, 1929
died February 9, 2013
Mary Hubbard Price Werner found the footsteps of the loved ones who went before her and followed them on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the age of 83.
Left behind are clouds of family and friends from around the world whose lives are diminished without her.
Mary (Sissy), her sister Margaret (Peggy) and her brother Robert (Bobbie, who died in 1934) were born in Greenwich, Connecticut to Mary Alice Houston Hubbard and Henry Dewitt Hubbard of Riverside. She lived the last 17 years of her life and died in Greensboro, North Carolina. In between, she lived and made lifelong friendships in Lima, Peru; Antwerp, Belgium; Berne, Switzerland; Port Elizabeth, South Africa; Harpenden, England; North Eastham, Cape Cod; and back again in Greenwich.
Mary attended Greenwich Academy and completed her nursing degree at Green Mountain College of Vermont and St. Luke’s Hospital of New York. She set aside her nursing career to follow her husband Bob Price in his career overseas for General Motors and bring up their four children, Diane Platt (Washington, D.C.), Suzanne Marchand (Lausanne, Switzerland), Barbara Caffrey (Greensboro, North Carolina), and Robert Price (Tustin, California).
Mary was widowed in 1987 at the age of 58. In December 1997 she married Bill Werner, a retired General Motors Overseas executive who had been Bob Price’s roommate at Wesleyan University during and after World War II. Bill had previously lost his beloved wife Gloria.
Bill and Mary had a loving marriage full of adventure for the 15 years they were given together. Combined, their eight children, spouses, fifteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, benefited from the many years they had already known each other and quickly adapted with pleasure to large family gatherings.
Mary’s life is a testament to the values of empathy, forgiveness and love of life. She led a full and vibrant life, embraced different cultures, and figured out pretty quickly that the language of human kindness needs no dictionary.
Left behind to celebrate her life are her husband Bill, his children and grandchildren; her children Diane Platt, Suzanne and Yves Marchand, Barbara and Dan Caffrey, Robert and Sandra Price; her grandchildren Louise and Andrew Mills, Sophie Daniels, Natalie and Isabelle Mills and William and Christopher Caffrey; her great-grandchildren Leah Mills OBrien, Damon Daniels and Ryan and Dylan Mills; and her sister and brother-in-law Peggy and Garry Higgins of Riverside, Connecticut.
Mary will be buried next to her parents and brother in Old Greenwich, Connecticut.
May God grant us all at least a small dollop of Mary’s endless sense of wonder and uncanny understanding that living a happy life starts with a sunny disposition. On dark nights, the moon will always shine, and every daybreak and sundown is a reason to applaud.
...and the stars will last, and them that have loved them dearly need never be afraid of the night.
