Richard A. Buckner, 53, passed away February 16, 2013 after an accident. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:00 a.m., Saturday, February 23rd at Holy Family Catholic Church, 274 Orchard St., Kansas City, KS 66101. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, KS 66112, with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow the service in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 7611 State Line, Suite 100; Kansas City, MO 64114 or the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, 5445 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas 66104.
Richard was born April 24, 1959 in Kansas City, Kansas to Lloyd and Donna (Stanley) Buckner. A lifelong KC area resident, he graduated from Piper High School in 1977. Richard joined the Air Force right after graduation and served until 1981, stationed in San Bernadino, California for much of his service. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a maintenance mechanic for almost 30 years, and was a member of the APWU. Richard was a member of the Wallula Christian Church in Lansing and recently became a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was an avid reader, especially of historical and military fiction; he enjoyed working on cars, though sometimes his “fixes” would work only for him. Richard loved traveling, especially to the ocean, where he would snorkel, scuba dive and fish. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and going to races, especially the Topeka Heartland Races and the KS Speedway. He also loved to snow ski. Richard loved the Lord and also enjoyed his involvement of the play he performed during Easter for many years at Wallula. He had a very big heart and would help anyone who needed it. Richard lived life for his granddaughters and children, they were his world, you could see this when he would speak of them, his face would light up. He found his true love, Pattie and though their time was shortened, they loved each other dearly and were committed to their faith in God and their marriage. Richard also loved his pets and they held a special place in his heart.
Richard was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents, he is survived by his wife, Pattie Buckner of the home; his daughter Lauren Weber and her husband Phil, son, Christopher Buckner and his wife Kimberly; step-daughter, Andrea Ashley-Dorado and her husband Arturo; step-son, Rodney Ashley, Jr. and his wife Miranda; brother Greg Buckner and his wife Diane, brother Tim Buckner and wife Laura; and grandchildren, Olivia, Dalilah and Lucia Weber and Allison and Elizabeth Buckner.
