Eli grew up in Mattapan; attended Boston Latin and graduated from Boston English High School. He briefly attended Northeastern University before enlisting in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Eli served in the European Campaign as a turret gunner/flight engineer with the 8th Air Force, 423rd Bomb Group. He flew 35 missions before being honorably discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant.
Mr. Barnett went on to complete his education at Western State University in CO and graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After attaining his Master’s Degree from Boston State College; Eli worked with The Ruge-Deforest consulting group at MIT (later Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton) on the commercial implementation of the SR-4 strain gauge. Mr. Barnett later went on to be employed as a Senior Engineer at Avco and retired from Raytheon Corporation at age 70.
In 1957, Eli married the late Doris (Adelstein) and moved to Marblehead in 1962.
A 50-year resident of Marblehead, Eli was always active within the community. Mr. Barnett was a part-time Math/Science Tutor during the 1960’s. He was an active member of the former Temple Israel, Jewish Community Center and Marblehead Rotary Club. A familiar face around town, Eli enjoyed fishing and his afternoon “old soldier’s coffee club” at the local Dunkin Donuts.
Mr. Barnett was predeceased by his brothers Louis, Meyer & Allan. Mr. Barnett is survived by his daughter Jodie & his beloved grand-daughters Ashley & Tori Holzwasser. Eli is also survived by his sisters-in-law Evelyn & Lois Barnett; and many nieces & nephews.
Funeral services at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, Salem on Tuesday (today), February 26, 2013 at 12 Noon. Interment at Pride of Lynn Cemetery, Lynn. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Marblehead Rotary, Aviv Center in Peabody, JCCNS Senior Adult Club or the charity of one’s choice.
