Larry Garland Thomas, 64, of Cherokee, died Monday, February 25, 2013 at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville. Born on August 15, 1948 in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Garland Thomas and Nellie Vess Thomas.
Mr. Thomas served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He loved golf and was an avid fisherman. He was a loving father, grandfather and brother who cherished his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his nephew, Matthew Thomas. He is survived by his daughter, Deette Bingham and her husband, Thomas of Old Fort; son, Derek Hamby and his wife, Teresa of Franklin; sister, Marie Padgham and her husband, Richard of Black Mountain; brother, Jerry Thomas and his wife, Glenda of Ft. Myers, FL; grandchildren, Michalyn and Garrett Bingham; and nephews, Terry and Gary McTindal and Mark Thomas.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 1, 2013 in the Chapel of the Western Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery in Black Mountain with the Reverend Ronnie Peterson officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the cemetery chapel.
