94, passed away on February 28th, 2013 in Jupiter, Florida. Charles was born July 8th 1918 in Covington, Ky. He graduated from Dayton High School where his achievements on the basketball court earned him induction into their Hall of Fame. While at Eastern Kentucky University he was named captain of the varsity basketball team and was a member of ROTC. During WWII he served as a Captain of a Field Artillery unit in the Aleutian Islands and was transferred to Germany to assist in civil affairs at the end of the war. Following the war, Charles earned his Masters Degree at the University of Georgia and began teaching school in Canton, Georgia. He later moved to West Palm Beach and began work with the Palm Beach County School District subsequently serving as teacher, principal, administrator and Area Superintendent. He was a lifetime member of the Florida Retired Educators Association having served both as president and secretary.
Charles was predeceased by Helen his wife of 68 years and son Bruce. He is survived by two daughters, Joyce Bakels & Carol Ellis, son-in-law John Ellis, 4 Grandchildren, Leland (Ginger), Darren (Christine), Victoria & Tim, 8 Great-Grandchildren, and 1 Great-Great-Granddaughter.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Friday, March 8, 2013 at Aycock-Riverside Funeral and Cremation Center.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the funeral home, followed by burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in West Palm Beach.
