Mrs. Barnwell, 86, affectionately known as “Miss Betty”, died peacefully on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at The Haven, Pineville, North Carolina after a brief illness. She was born February 18th, 1927 in Shelby, North Carolina, the second daughter of the late Essie Allen and Fred Pearson Culbreth. The family moved to Charlotte shortly thereafter, where Betty attended Wesley Heights grammar school, the old Harding High School and Coker College, Hartsville, South Carolina. In 1947, she married Herbert Eugene Cline, Jr. (1917 - 1978). They made their home in Columbia, South Carolina for 18 years where their two sons, Herbert Eugene Cline III and Joseph Griffith Cline were born. The family returned to Charlotte in 1968. In 1978, Betty married William Habersham Barnwell (1921 - 1980) and made her home in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Betty returned to Charlotte in 1987 to be near her sons and family.
Betty was a proud and devoted mother who enjoyed her family and large circle of friends. She was incredibly compassionate, understanding and always had a way of finding the best in everyone. Her strong faith helped guide her through difficult times, and was always the guiding force in her life. Her beautiful smile, the joy of her spirit, the twinkle in her eyes, will be deeply missed, along with her words of support and encouragement. She was most fulfilled by her work as a “Pink Lady” at Presbyterian Hospital and Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
She is survived by her sons, Herbert Eugene Cline III and wife Diane of Charlotte, and Joseph Griffith Cline of Heathrow, Florida; her sister, Doris Culbreth Dixon; her two brothers, Fred Pearson Culbreth, Jr. and Joe Allen Culbreth, and their wives, Ann and Diana; nieces, nephews, many great-nieces and nephews; and three black and tan dachshunds; “her granddogs”, Baron, Eva and Roscoe.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 pm on Tuesday evening, March 5, 2013 at Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte. The memorial service to honor Mrs. Barnwell will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, March 6th in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be private.
