Uncasville,-Ethel Staubley Rice, 100, went to be with her lord on Sunday, March 10, 2013. Ethel was born in Norwich Ct. July 16, 1912, daughter of C. Edward Staubley and Mary Rankin Staubley. She married Edward “Buster” Rice in January 1929, who predeceased her in 1984. Together they had two daughters who survive her; Marjorie Rousseau of Uncasville CT. and Dorothy Gorra of Northampton MA. Ethel is survived by two sisters, Doris Adams of Norwich CT, and Shirley Christiansen of Heuvelton NY. She was predeceased by brothers George and Richard Staubley both of Uncasville CT and sisters Dorothy Hewitt of Uncasville CT. and Pauline Kolashuk of Oakdale CT. She is survived by 6 Grandchildren; Michael Gorra and wife Brigitte of Northampton MA, John Gorra and wife Rebecca of Staunton VA, Peter Rousseau and wife Helen of Uncasville CT., Charles Rousseau and wife Barbara of Mystic CT., Alex Rousseau and wife Susan of Ledyard CT. and Amy Rousseau Armstrong and husband James Armstrong of Uncasville CT, 11 Great-Grandchildren and 4 Great Great-Grandchildren.
Ethel attended Norwich Free Academy and the New London Business School. She worked as a secretary for 23 years at The Teamsters Union Local 493. She was a member of The Montville Union Baptist Church and was Trustee and Church Treasurer for over 50 years relinquishing these duties in 2012 after her 100th Birthday. She was an active member of her community; President of the former Democratic Women’s Club, Past Matron Oweneco Chapter 104 and Secretary Emeritus, Grand Chaplain for The Order of Eastern Star of the State of Ct., Past Worthy High Priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Past President of The Past Matrons Assoc. Of New London County, Member Daughter of the Nile, Member Teamsters Retirees, Secretary Montville Historical Society, Member of The United Ostomy Association, Member Senior Citizens and AARP Norwich Chapter 3636.
Known affectionately as Nana to many, she lived her life with an unwavering faith and was an inspiration to all. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4-8 p.m. at the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen, 53 Norwich-New London Tnpk., Uncasville CT. Funeral will be held Saturday 10:00 a.m. at The Montville Union Baptist Church (meeting directly at church) with burial to follow at Comstock Cemetery.
