Dr. Charles S. Lane, Jr. 93, of Fort Smith, died March 13, 2013 in Methodist Nursing Home. He was born May 28, 1919 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to the late Charles Spurgeon Lane, Sr. and Anna Marie Temple Lane. Dr. Lane was a physician, specializing in Otolaryngology, from 1950 through 1986. Following graduation from Hattiesburg High School in 1937, he attended Mississippi State College in Starkville, Mississippi and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge for his pre-medical training and Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He graduated in 1944 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Lane served an internship at the Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans. He was on active duty in the United Sates Navy during World War II, serving as medical officer on two naval vessels in the Pacific area of operation, and later served during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge from the Navy, he completed post-graduate study in the specialty of Otolaryngology at Tulane University Graduate School of Medicine. Following graduation he took a Residency in Otolaryngology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston. In 1950, Dr. Lane was certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, and in that year, he entered the practice of Otolaryngology in Fort Smith with the late Dr. E.C. Moulton, Sr. and Dr. E.C. Moulton, Jr. He became a member of the Western Arkansas Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic in 1969 and continued to practice with this clinic until his retirement in 1986. Subsequently, Dr. Lane performed voluntary medical work on the mission fields in Bangalore, India and St. Vincent Island. Dr. Lane was a member of the American Medical Association, the Arkansas State Medical Society, The American Rhinology Society, the Arkansas Ear Nose and Throat Medical Society, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American College of Surgeons, and the Sebastian County Medical Society. His long-time church membership was at South Side Baptist Church. Dr. Lane is survived by one daughter, Sherard Lane Chapline and her husband Ed, of Arlington, Texas; one son, Dr. Charles S. Lane, III and his wife Carol, of Hot Springs, AR; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two unborn great-grandchildren arriving this year. He is also survived by his niece, Ann-Marie Cornett of Gulfport, MS.
He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn Hudson Lane; his parents, Charles Spurgeon Lane, Sr. and Anna Marie Temple Lane; and his sister, Kathryn Lane Laviolett. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, March 16, 2013, in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Roselawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Chuck Lane, Ed Chapline, Charley Lane, Kirk Chapline, Ryan Curtis, Travis Cram, and Trevor Bush. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Dr. Paul Wills, Dr. Tom Raymond, Dr. Jack Gedosh, Dr. Ken Wallace, and Ben Jordan.
