Donald Wearn Cathey, 89, of Charlotte passed away Friday March 15, 2013 at Levine Dickson Hospice House. Born January 19, 1924 in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Cathey was the son of the late Henry Wearn Cathey and Rosa Spratt Cathey. He was a descendant of the first non Native American child born in Mecklenburg County.
Don graduated from Central High in 1942, attended NC State and was a veteran of the US Army Air Corp, serving as 2nd Lt in WWII.
Mr. Cathey retired from Philips Roxane after many years as a regional sales manager. He was a longtime leader at Forest Hill Church where he became known for his beautiful solo voice and teaching. He enjoyed singing with the Prime Chimers at Weddington United Methodist Church after retiring to Walden Pond, Waxhaw, NC in 1996.
Mr. Cathey was predeceased by Patricia Oakley Cathey, his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of 64 years.
Surviving are brother Ben Cathey of Knoxville,TN, five children Donnalyn Reich(Ron), Patrick Cathey(Carol) Judy Gotherman (Bob) Cindy Brookshire(Billy) and Jeff Cathey along with 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family of Don Cathey wishes to express deep gratitude to the staff of Clare Bridge, Carriage Club for their care and for the devotion shown by Caring Hearts at Weddington Methodist Church over the last 4 year years.
A memorial service will be held at 4PM, Friday, March 22, 2013 at Weddington Methodist Church, 13901 Providence Rd. Weddington, NC 28104.
Memorials may be made to the Caring Hearts Ministry at Weddington Methodist Church or the Levine Dickson Hospice House at Southminster.
Don lived a long and fulfilling life as a godly man, sharing his love of Jesus Christ with everyone by example. He has now gone home to be with his Lord and Savior.
