Mr. Matthews was born in Cherokee Co., AL, on November 13, 1943, the son of the late James and Zonie Matthews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Matthews, and an infant brother. He was a graduate of Alexandria, AL, High School, attended numerous in house banking courses and had served as a police officer in Americus for a period of time.
Mr. Matthews was in banking for 32 years, being associated with Rome Bank and Trust, C & S, Greater Rome Bank, Home Federal savings and the Bank of Adairsville. He retired from United Community Bank as vice-president in 2009. He was a member of the Model Ruritan Club, and enjoyed annual hunting trips with his co-workers. He also enjoyed antiques, the Rome Braves and his grandkids’ activities.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Anne Shelnutt Gowens Matthews, to whom he was married January 12, 1984; children, Debbie Gowens Jones and Mike Jones, Braselton, and David Gowens and Jill Gowens, Silver Creek; grandsons, Michael Jones and Haley, Winder, Daniel Jones, Braselton, Dalton Gowens, Branson Gowens and Brody Gowens, all of Silver Creek; brothers and their wives, Dennis and Shannon Matthews, Aragon, Leroy Matthews and fiancée Brenda Brannon, Rome, and Donnie and Alliene Matthews, Aragon; a sister-in-law, Dot Matthews, Montezuma; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services was held Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home, Rome, with the Rev. Max Tucker and Dr. Frank Wood officiating. Interment was in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Doug Matthews officiating.
Pallbearers were co-workers from the United Community Bank: Steve Kemp, Ken Guice, David Johnson, Ward Daugherty, Jarrod Floyd, Dan Kinnebrew and Todd Kelly. Honorary pallbearers were John Self, Cliff White, Fred Hnatuk, Harold Crowe and members of the Model Ruritan Club.
The family received friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Friday, March 22, 2013, from 6 until 9 p.m.
