In 1933, Lucile met and fell in love with Roy Miller. It was love at first sight, after a brief courtship they eloped and remained devoted to each other through 68 years of marriage until Roy passed away in 2002. Throughout Roy’s twenty-nine year military career, Lucile and the children followed him wherever the military posted him, having exciting and educational experiences at each assignment. They lived in El Paso, Texas; Globe, Arizona; Dodge City, Kansas; San Marcos, Texas; San Antonio, Texas; Johnson Air Base, Japan; Ramey AFB Puerto Rico and Austin, Texas. Roy was a 75 year member of the ‘HAM’ community – W5FOZ; when Lucile was 75 years old she capitulated and decided to join Roy in his hobby; so she took her test for her amateur radio license, passed and became KB5YKM; she set up her ‘HAM’ station next to Roy’s.
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Lucile was also a career woman and an avid volunteer worker. In Japan, after World War II and during the Korean Conflict, she did volunteer work in the base hospital providing a variety of services including admitting patients. Wherever Roy was stationed she volunteered in several different capacities, including serving as a ‘Gray Lady’ in various base hospitals and clinics. In Austin, she was the office manager for Safeway Farm Products and later retired from the City of Austin as the accountant for Brackenridge Hospital.
Lucile was a very active member of Rosedale Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for several years. Her closest friends were her ‘Golden Gems’. She was proud of her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Retired Officers’ Wives Club and the Association of Government Accountants.
Lucile’s very large, extended family and the many friends she has throughout the world will miss her wit, counsel, easy laughter and wonderful smile.
The family is especially appreciative for the wonderful care Mom received from all her caregivers, particularly Verna Sanders and Dr. David Joseph and his staff.
