1927-2013
Darl C. Foster of Shasta Lake, age 85, died Friday, March 29, 2013. Born in Thatcher, Arizona on July 16, 1927, Darl served in the Navy during World War II then moved to southern California in 1949. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for many years until he earned his college degree and teaching credential from California State University, Fullerton. In 1968, he and his family moved to Redding. He taught 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Happy Valley School until his retirement in the mid-1980s. He was also a volunteer with the Happy Valley Fire Department. He was a member of the Elks for 45 years.
Darl was a man of many talents and interests over the years. He loved to golf, hunt, fish, swim, scuba dive, play pool, ride motorcycles, ballroom dance, and sing. He had a wonderful baritone voice enjoyed by all who were fortunate enough to hear him. He was also quite the handyman and builder. When in southern California, he built a 14 foot cabin cruiser which he motored to Catalina Island and back. He also built his house in Happy Valley.
He will be well-remembered by his friends and family, as well as his former students. His wife Gene used to say that they frequently met up with former students when in town, all of whom said Darl was a wonderful, remarkable teacher who made learning fun.
Darl is preceded in death by his beloved wife Gene Mitchell, who died in July 2012. He is survived by his daughters Kathe Green of Nevada and Jo Ann (Mark) Skousen of New York, his sister Loretta Crawford of Oklahoma, his brother Bob Cates of Texas, his uncle Keith Johnson of Arizona, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
