WEST COLUMBIA- A memorial service for Henry Calvin “Cal” Shadwell will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2013 at Providence Presbyterian Church in West Columbia. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family.
Mr. Shadwell passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Presbyterian Retirement Community at the age of 89. His son was with him when he died. Born September 23, 1923 in Des Moines, IA, he grew up in Cincinatti, OH and Charlotte, NC. After serving as a flight engineer in the Marines during World War II and Korea, he graduated from Clemson University in 1949. He was married to Rebeeca Wiley Shadwell and moved to New York City where he worked as a camera man with NBC for 35 years. He retired to Columbia, SC in 1984 after winning three emmy awards for dramatic and sporting event productions. Cal loved to sing, being a member of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. as well as his church choir at Providence Presbyterian Church. He continued singing after moving into the Presbyterian Community in Lexington, SC. As an avid wood worker, he shared his talents with Habitat for Humanity and as a master gardener, he volunteered at the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Columbia, SC.
Cal was the son of Herschel and Wava Wilson Shadwell, Charlotte, NC and is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Rebecca Wiley Shadwell. He is survived by his daughter, Becky Hudak of Schenectady, NY, and his two sons; Hank Shadwell of Camden, SC and Cliff Shadwell of Knoxville, TN. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Paul Hudak, Julie Hudak, Trisha Shadwell, Rebecca Shadwell, Alden Shadwell, Ford Shadwell, Grant Shadwell, Drake Shadwell, Sam Shadwell, and Kate Shadwell.
