John Clark Barker, Jr., 88, passed away April 20, 2013. His loving wife Christine Barker followed him on April 22, 2013. John was born in Valdosta, GA, son of the late John C. and Alma (Mills) Barker. After graduating from high school, he joined the US Navy and served in WWII in the Pacific Theater. John worked for S.B. Hubbard/Genuine Hardware for over 30 years.
Christine was born in Shelby, NC, daughter of the late Charles Glenn and Ruby (Brown) Rainey. She was a “Bell Pioneer” with BellSouth with a long and successful career where she was once named Employee of the Year.
The Barker’s were lifelong members of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church. John and Christine were dedicated Gator fans who for decades attended home football games with family and friends. Both were enthusiastic travelers. John was a true green thumb and his garden was the envy of the neighborhood. Christine was an accomplished artist, painting pictures of her life and travels.
John and Christine were preceded in death by a son, David.
Surviving are a devoted son, John Glenn Barker (Mindy), three grandchildren, Kristin, Justin and Matthew, daughter-in-law Becky and many dear friends. John leaves behind two brothers, James and William while Christine is survived by her sister Blanche.
The family will greet friends for visitation on Friday, April from 6 – 8 pm at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32207. A double funeral service will be celebrated at 10:30 am Saturday, April 27 (their 62nd Wedding Anniversary) at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
