Harry Dailey, 79, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, April 24, 2013. Harry was born in Beaumont, Texas, May 21, 1933, to Percy Arond Dailey and Tralice Norma Trump. He grew up in High Island, Texas and often told stories of his childhood experiences on the coast of trapping in the marshes, seining at the beach, working the oil fields, dancing at Crystal Beach and fun times with his large family of brothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Harry enjoyed the camaraderie of teamwork playing 6 man football, good friends and respect of the “the game.” He graduated from High Island High School in 1951, where he found his calling in sports.
Harry attended Stephen F. Austin State University from 1951 to 1955 where he played football and track and earned a BS in Education in 1955 and a Masters of Education in 1959. There he met Barbara in 1953 and they were married in 1954. He served in the Navy for 2 years and then coaching and teaching became his life. From 1957 to 1988 Harry had the opportunity to offer his knowledge and skills to students and athletes, instilling in them tough love and discipline along with praise of even the smallest accomplishments. With thanks we acknowledge Sealy HS, Coppers Cove HS, Austin High, McCallum HS, Anderson HS, Leander HS, and St. Michaels HS for 41 years of learning and sports. We proudly wave your colors today.
Harry and Barbara were blessed with 3 children: Darla, Danny, and Todd. Following in his footsteps both in careers and in life, his family continues to be inspired by his legacy of love and living. Harry loved his family very much. He was a wonderful man, a man of honor with integrity and values, a super dad, and the greatest “Papaw” to his 9 grandchildren who can tell you stories of happy times at sporting events, at the beach house on 4th of July, his practical jokes, his famous “Papaw pancakes” and his gentle and tough life lessons.
From 1988 to today, coach enjoyed his retirement years. He loved his church family, Lord of Life Lutheran and was blessed with the opportunity to help build the mission church. His legacy came full circle with the rebuilding of the beach cabin after hurricane Ike. At the beach; toss in a line, catch a crab, build a sandcastle, collect seashells, put your toes in the sand, and enjoy the sunrise and the sun set. Life is good. Harry enjoyed “the dance”.
Harry is preceded in death by his parents Percy Arond Dailey and Tralice Norma Trump. He is survived by his wife Barbara; his three children, daughter Darla Gay and husband Roy; his sons Danny Dailey and wife Shawn, and Todd Dailey and wife Leigh Ann; his grandchildren, Cary Gay, Ashtynn and Mitchell Dailey, Kendall and Truett Hardgrove, Walker Dailey, and Kaleb, Kyle and Kole Dailey; and his brothers Lonnie Dailey and Georgie Dailey.
Appreciation is sent to Dr. Robert Raley, Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center of Duval, Dr. Jason Martin, Josie Nelson, Hospice Austin, and the nurses, aides, and staff who lovingly took care of Harry.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Lord of Life Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
