A native and lifelong resident of New Iberia, Shirley graduated from New Iberia High School, attended SLI for one year, and graduated from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in 1946. While at Hotel Dieu, she was selected to be a member of the US Cadet Nurse Corps. After graduation, she worked as a private duty nurse until she joined the staff of Dauterive Hospital where she worked for forty-three years. During her nursing career, she received many awards including Nurse of the Year, Employee of the Year, and had a nursing scholarship named in her honor. Hospital Administrator, Robert Woodring, wrote about Shirley "No one is a stranger to Miss Shirley. No one is a bother to Miss Shirley. She always seems to have some time and love to share with others!" Shirley was also involved with and volunteered for many civic organizations. She was a charter member and past president of The American Women's Business Association, and was named Woman of the Year in 1980 and 2002. She was a life-long blood donor, volunteered for the Council on Aging, and belonged to the American Heart Association and AARP. She loved traveling, writing poetry, and especially enjoyed her creative writing class. In addition to her civic involvement, she was a lector at Saint Peter's Church for many years. She was also an active member of the Lay Carmelites and received the Marion Award for her various religious activities.
