John Wallace Sjogren, age 85, of Mesaba Ave. and Punta Gorda, Florida. John was born March 15, 1928to Fred and Agnes Sjogren in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Fairfax High School of Los Angeles in January 1945. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean conflict. John earned a BA Degree in business and economics from UMD. He worked for Minnesota Power in Accounting and Finance for 36 years, retiring in 1988. He married Joan Carlson of Duluth on August 30, 1957.
John is a member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, Lake Superior Masonic Lodge of which he was a Past Master, Scottish Rite Bodies of Duluth and the Aad Temple of the Shrine. He is also a member of Lakeview American Legion Post of which he was a past Commander and the Society of the Forty and Eight. He was a past member of Ridgeview Country Club and the Duluth Curling Club. He was a member of the University for Seniors where he was a class leader in several classes dealing with WWII and Presidential Biographies. He is also a member of the Punta Gorda Elks Club and the Punta Gorda American Legion.
John had been active for many years in youth hockey and baseball as a coach, manager and director. He was President of Little League, Senior League and the Spirit of Duluth Hockey Tournament.
John is preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Barbara Johnson.
John is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Sally Tarnowski of Duluth; son, David (Jane) of Eagen, MN; two grandchildren, Katie and Ben Tarnowski; brother, Tom (Judy); sister-in-law, Beverly (Jim) Anderson, all of Duluth.
Memorial Service will be held Monday, May 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, 2105 Woodland Ave. Visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Shriners Hospitals or Glen Avon Presbyterian Church memorial fund.
