Jim was born in Port Washington, NY to the late Mr. & Mrs. John J. and Anna Petrowski Megiel. He served in the US Army during the Vietnamese War and was stationed statewide at Fort Benning in Georgia. He met his wife Margaret (nee Ernst) in Long Island and they have spent forty-nine loving years together. He was a licensed funeral director for 27 years and retired after twenty-five years from Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York in 1995. He and Margaret retired to Sarasota, FL and then to North Carolina to be closer to their two daughters and grandchildren. He was adored and lovingly called “Papa” by many close to him.
He is survived by his wife Margaret; daughters and their spouses, Michelle Mann (Ronald) of Winston-Salem and Melissa Parnitzke (Michael) of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Brian Manuel and Eric James Belaustegui, and Sophia Margaret and Emmalyne Ashley Parnitzke; brother, John C. “Jack” Megiel of NY; sister, Patricia Diestel (Jim) of FL; sisters-in-law, Myra Megiel of FL and Annette Schweizer (Artie) of FL; nephews Greg Diestel, Robert Megiel and Kenneth Schweizer; niece, Kathleen Wright along with several other nieces and nephews; dearest friends, Tony Cerrito, Bill Corbitt, Bob Hanz who has been like a brother to him, Artie Sekunda, Lamont “Monty” Tillot, Charlie Todaro and Dr. Jenny White. He was preceded in death by his sister, Constance “Connie” Rose and brother; Robert “Doc” Megiel.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Frank Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel. Funeral services will be held at the Chapel on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 11:00 am. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.frankvoglerandsons.com.
Mr. Megiel will be remembered by his family and friends as a loving and caring husband, father and friend with a great sense of humor. He had a passion for his family and he truly loved life.
