Born in Paris, TX, he grew up in Fort Worth. After completing college in Texas, he pursued a career in educational publishing that took him to several states over the years.
When he and his wife, Ilse Wolfe, settled in Sparta, they both viewed the move as a chance to dedicate their time to community involvement.
He was a member of the vestry of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, as well as a trustee of the Sparta Education Foundation.
He became active in politics as well, serving as the Democratic candidate for State Assembly in 2011. At the time of his death, he was the Sparta municipal chair for the party, as well as a member of the Executive Committee of the Sussex County Democratic Committee and on the Democratic 24th District 2013 Campaign Committee.
At home, he was a voracious reader who handled all the family’s gardening.
A memorial service will be held Sat., May 25, 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Sparta.
Survivors include his wife, Ilse Wolfe; daughters Aliya and Ellis Wolfe-Nye, at home; two brothers, Erle, of Dallas, and Benjamin, of Winston-Salem, NC; three sons, Jim Goldsworthy, of Gainesville, TX; Mark Goldsworthy, of Salem, OR; and Benjamin Nye, Plano, TX; a daughter, Michele Aguilera, of Oklahoma City, OK; and nine grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the James B. Nye Scholarship Fund established for high school seniors. Checks made out to the fund may be sent to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 85 Conestoga Tr., Sparta, 07871.
