Wilbert Virgie Unnasch, 95, of Taylor, passed away in Round Rock on May 20th 2013. Wilbert was born March 12, 1918 in the community of Detmold, Texas to Rudolph E. Zenkner Unnasch and Ella Annie Noack. He attended school in the Detmold community and proudly served the United States in the US Army during World War II. He served with honor in Africa, Italy, Austria, and Germany. He earned EAME Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Medal. He attained the rank of Technician 4th Grade and was honorably discharged in December 1944.
After leaving the service Wilbert met and married Norine Schwab on July 30th 1950 in Taylor Texas. Wilbert worked as a meterman at Texas Power and Light – a job he retired from after more than 33 years of service. After his retirement in July of 1978 he continued his second career repairing ‘fencers’ (as he called them). He was known throughout all of central Texas as the man to repair electric fence chargers. Wilbert never really retired and was proud to tell you that he worked until the age of 92, when he suffered a stroke in June of 2010. Until that time he enjoyed being an active Ham Radio operator and was known by his call letters K5ZLA.
Wilbert was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Thorndale, TX. He was also a proud member of the VFW Post #4009 and a member of the American Legion.
Wilbert was known by his friends as “Skippy” and by his family as “Butch.” Wilbert was very proud to be a part of many family reunions throughout the years. He took pride and joy in attending family events year after year.
Wilbert is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 58 years, Norine Schwab Unnasch; an infant son Wilbert Virgie Unnasch Jr.; brothers Leroy Unnasch and Glandon Unnasch; sisters Irene E. Unnasch Marek and Laverne Unnasch Mullin.
Wilbert is survived by his brothers R. E. “Sixty” Unnasch and Eldon Verdes Unnasch, both of Thorndale. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Thorndale.
The family would like to thank those who provided loving care during Wilbert’s final years; to his wonderful neighbors Robert and Janie Alverado, and Mrs. Gertrude Belicheck for including Wilbert as an extended member of their families.
