He was born in Guilford County on September 13, 1912, the second of 6 sons and a daughter, to Carl Hampton Yow and Lena Lydia Osborne Yow. He graduated from Guilford College and was happily married to Lalah Smith Yow until her death in 1992. He is survived by 7 nieces, 9 nephews and a large extended family.
Howard and Lalah served the Society of Friends for 47 years at NC Quaker churches in Cedar Square, Kernersville, Wayne County, Hood Swamp, Pikesville, Winston-Salem, Liberty, Mount Airy, Dunn and Harmony at Winthrop. Additionally he served in Noblesville, Indiana and 5 years as Education Administrator of the Friends School in Kenya, West Africa. He was active in the Rotary Club and Boy Scouts. He was an avid reader, photographer, gardener, traveler, hunter, gunsmith, woodworker, long distance bicyclist, as well as an avid stock car race fan who attended all the Indy 500's during his ministry in Indiana. Howard’s personal motto was: "Service Above Self" and he was especially proud of his ministerial part in the original planning, building and development of Friends Homes at Guilford; the family is very grateful for the loving care which he received from the staff there for the last 14 years of his life.
Services will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Centre Friends Meeting, 325 East NC Hwy 62, Greensboro, NC. 27406, with the Rev. Terry Venable officiating. Interment will be in the Centre Friends Cemetery followed by a brief reception in the church Fellowship Hall.
