1927 – 2013
Mattie Lanell “Nell” May Powell, 86, of Pensacola passed away peacefully at Gulf Breeze Baptist Hospital on May 21, 2013.
Nell was born March 9th, 1927 in Opelika, AL, lived in Montgomery during the Great Depression where she watched her cousin Hank Williams, Sr., perform. She relocated with her family to Pensacola in the early 1940’s where she was a cheerleader at Blount High School.
Nell was a Charter Member of the East Brent Baptist Church and traced her ancestors from Eastern Shore Virginia in the 17th Century, North Carolina in the 18th Century and South Carolina in the 19th Century until they relocated to Deer Stand (Troy), Alabama during the War of 1812.
Nell worked as a bookkeeper and retired as a manager of Goodwill Industries in 1997. She loved to bowl, dance, sew, garden and cook. She was generous with her friends, family and coworkers.
Nell is preceded in death by her husband, John Q. Powell; parents, Catherine Wood and James May; and two brothers, Jim and Harold May.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda (James) Furner of Milton, FL; grandson, Christopher Furner of Hollywood, CA; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Jeremy) Jensen of Sunrise, FL and Steffani Brewton of Miami, FL; two great granddaughters, Morgan Boyles of Henderson, TN and Sophie Van Tassel of Concord, NC.
Private services will be held.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.
