Clark Sullivan, 88, of Largo, FL, passed away on June 6, 2013 at the Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Petersburg. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Katheryne (Katie) Sullivan, and a daughter, Louise K. Sullivan. Clark is survived by his son, Ralph C Sullivan of Boston, his daughter, Lyle Ann Sullivan of Wilmington, NC, and his son, Stephen B. Z. Sullivan (wife Rhea), of Minneapolis. He leaves five grandchildren and one great grandchild, to whom he was affectionately known as “PawPaw”. He had a number of nieces and nephews, two of whom were like sons to him: Richard A. Sullivan (wife Sophie) of Chicago, and Bryce F. Sullivan (wife Beth) of Nashville, TN.
Clark was born in Chicago and earned his Eagle Scout badge. He joined the Navy in 1942, and served several war patrols during WWII as a submariner in the South Pacific on board the USS Hake. Clark and Katie met in San Francisco, where they were married in 1946. He then returned to Chicago, where he earned a BS in Physics from Northwestern University, before settling down in Battle Creek, Michigan. He then became a Vice President of Sullivan Milk Products, where he opened and managed retail outlets. Clark was then employed as a life insurance agent by Connecticut Mutual Life, and later as a Chamber of Commerce executive. He was active in community affairs, including the Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis and the Episcopal Church. Never shy, Clark loved to entertain, and especially enjoyed singing show tunes and ballads for others.
During their retirement, Clark and Katie cruised all around the world together, in search of high adventure. Their trips together included a ten day cruise with family members to the Panama Canal in December 1996, in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Clark became a “Friend of Bill” just before he moved to Largo in 1982. Over the course of more than thirty years, Clark helped hundreds of others work their way thru the Twelve Steps of AA. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Serenity Club of Clearwater, 631 Turner St, Clearwater, FL 33756.
