Edward L. Metzler, 83, of Rockford passed away on June 13. Born on September 29, 1929 in Freeport, he was the son of the late Stanley and Mary (Grattan) Metzler. He married Gloria Hendricks on September 16, 1953 in Rockford
He was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and the first active duty military member from the Rockford area to participate in the Korean Conflict.
A graduate of St. Thomas Catholic High School, he was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church; and the Knights of Columbus #470.
Affectionately known as Mr. Fix It, he enjoyed working on any project that involved problem solving. He enjoyed cross word puzzles with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, fishing, spending time at his cabin, and most of all his family.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Gloria Metzler; daughter, Lorana (Dennis) Garvin; grandchildren, James Garvin, Denise (Mark) White, and Heather (Steve) Madden; great grandchildren, Tawni, Nick, Brittney, Allison, Ashley, Maddie, Michael, Chris, Cassie, Kailyn, Brennen, and Donovan; and 6 great, great grandchildren.
Predeceased by his parents, and brother, Stanley Metzler.
Funeral Mass, 10 a.m., Tuesday, June18, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 617 Lincoln Avenue, Rockford, Father Zbigniew Zajchowski officiating. Visitation, 6-8 p.m., Monday, June 17, at Sunset Funeral Home and will continue at the Church, 9 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, to time of mass. Entombment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
