Sumner L. Shir, age 88, of Waban, on Friday, June 14, 2013. For 61 years, beloved husband of Ruth (Kantor) Shir. Loving father of Josiah Shir, Daniel Shir & his wife Miriam, and Esther Briskin & her husband Jeff. Cherished grandfather of Jeremy, Allison, Joseph, Ben and Eli. Dear brother of Philip Shir & his wife Hope.
Graduate of Brookline High School and Harvard University, Class of 1945. Until retirement, Sumner was a principal of Benjamin Shir, Inc. He was past board president of the Boston Guild for the Hard of Hearing. With his wife Ruth, they founded Community Housing for Adult Independence (CHAI). Former board member of Common Cause of Massachusetts. A dedicated volunteer for many organizations including the Hebrew College Library, Newton Traveling Meals, and teaching English as a second language at JCHE. Longtime member of Temple Emanuel, Newton.
Services will be at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline on Sunday, June 16th at 11:00am. Burial at Lindwood Memorial Park, Randolph. Following burial, memorial observance will be at his residence until 5:00pm resuming 7-9pm, continuing Monday through Thursday 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
