Walter was born on September 1, 1924 in Centralia, IL., the son of Walter Gray and Poet Curd Vick. He married Phyllis Fortney and she preceded him in death, as well as 3 sisters and a step-son. He married Betty DeGroot on December 29, 1989 and she survives. He was a member of Parkway Church of Christ and a past Elder at Clearlake Church of Christ. He was veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army during the Campaign in N. Africa, D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Vick was a long-time employee of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad.
He is survived by his three sons and families: Dale and Carol Vick of Indianapolis, IN., Ron and Angie Vick of Rome, GA., and David and Brenda Vick of Watauga, TX., two step-daughters: Julie DeGroot and Becky Gregory, and one stepson Randy DeGroot all of Springfield, two sisters: Maxine Beaver of Centralia IL and Libby Davis of Canton OH; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 6:00pm on Friday July 12, 2013 at Parkway Church of Christ, 1350 North Bruns Lane, and the family will meet friends from 3:00pm until the time of service Friday at church. A graveside service will be held at 10:00am on Saturday July 13 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia, IL.
