Mr. Goldberg was born December 20, 1929 in Plainfield, New Jersey, son of George H. and Lillian N. Patterson Goldberg. Dick graduated from Dunellen New Jersey High School where he was All-State in basketball and baseball and is a member of the school's Hall of Fame. He attended Rutgers University and graduated from the University of Delaware, Class of 1952, where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity, the National Society of Scabbard and Blade, and the basketball and baseball teams. He received a 2nd Lt. Commission and served in the U.S. Army from 1952 through 1954. Upon discharge, he joined his father and became partner of Goldberg Men's Store. In 1962, Dick became a special agent of the FBI and was subsequently assigned to offices in Savannah, GA; Charleston, SC; Charlotte, NC; and Raleigh where he served from 1965 through 1984. After retiring in 1984, Dick joined General Parts, Inc. (Carquest) as the Director or Security until 1995. Dick was an active member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher.
Dick met Jean Thomas in the last semester of their senior year at the University of Delaware and on June 27, 1953 they married. In addition to Jean, his wife of 60 years, Dick is survived by his daughter Jane Hunter, husband Carey of Raleigh and children, John, Katie, Sarah Paige and Logan; and his daughter Jill Kispert, husband John of Atherton, California and children Julia and John. Mr. Goldberg was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Richard (Tommy) in 1983.

A memorial service will be held at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 5101 Oak Park Rd., Raleigh, NC 27612, on Saturday, July 20th at 2:00pm. At 3:30pm, the family will receive friends at The Cypress of Raleigh, 8801 Cypress Lakes Dr., Raleigh, NC 27615, The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Giles Presbyterian Church or to the Tommy Goldberg Memorial Scholarship Fund, Triangle Community Foundation, 324 Blackwell Street, Suite 1220, Durham, NC 27701-3690. This fund provides scholarships for children to attend Camp Kanata in Durham, NC.
