Gilberto Cantu went to be with the Lord his Savior on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the tender age of 89. He resided at 11279 Taylor Draper Lane, Apt #257 in Austin. Gilbert was born on August 18, 1923 in Laredo, Texas to Alberto and Maria (Elizondo) Cantu.
Gilbert joined the US Army on April 10, 1943, and was Honorably Discharged on February 1, 1946. He was in the 928th Field Artillery, 103rd Infantry Division, US Army, serving as a Cannoneer. Gilbert was decorated with the American Theater Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. He began working at Kelly AFB as a Civil Service Sheet Metal Mechanic on September 14, 1951, and retired on March 9, 1977. On February 4, 1949, Gilbert married the love of his life, Irene Barrera.
Gilbert is preceded in death by his two sons, Eric, and Adriel “AC”. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Irene, and son, Gilbert Jr., and daughter-in-law, Kim A. Eckert.
Gilbert will always be remembered as a loving husband and a very proud father. He loved to coach his three sons in baseball. He was a very good baseball player himself growing up and played for the Mexican and Texas Baseball Leagues.
The family has decided to hold a private graveside service at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
