Born in New Bedford, son of the late Curtis S. and Blanche D. (Paquette) Bates, he was a resident of Tampa, Florida for several years and lived in Dartmouth for most of his life. He was a graduate of Dartmouth High School, class of 1939.
A United States Army Veteran, he served as a Tech 4 during World War II in North Africa and France.
Mr. Bates worked in the insurance industry and was the principal and co-founder of Vermette and Bates Insurance Agency in New Bedford. He worked as an insurance adjuster for Home Insurance Co. of NYC, NY and Service Fire Insurance for 25 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the Reservation Golf Club in Mattapoisett, a Mason with the Noquochoke A.M. & F.M. Lodge and a member of the Dartmouth High School Hall of Fame for the Golf Team State Champions.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Christine P. Starvaggi of Lakeville and Brenda B. Bates-Matthew of Fairhaven; two sons, Bradford A. Bates of New Bedford and Bruce C. Bates of Dartmouth; two brothers, Curtis S. Bates, Jr. of Sacramento, CA and Allen S. Bates of Acushnet; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 11am in the Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church, 11 Anderson Way, Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the church. Arrangements are in the care of the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth.
