He was born July 23, 1950, in Ft. Bragg, NC, and was the son of the late Karl Edward and Helen Mae Gentle Gemes. He worked 33 years in law enforcement, first as a police officer with the Statesville Police Department and then retired as Assistant Chief with the Cornelius Police Department. He loved the Carolina Panthers and enjoyed working with computers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Austin Johnson, Elizabeth Mae Gemes, and Gabbie Shane Gemes.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Janet Stanley Gemes, whom he married on July 11, 1987; five children, Gary Gemes (Beth Myers) of Statesville, David (Melissa) Gemes of Lincolnton, Richard Gemes of Statesville, Missy (Dennis) Anderson of Chilhowie, VA, and Jay (Christy) Johnson of Charlotte; a brother, Gary Albert (Judy) Gemes of Mineral Springs, NC; 17 grandchildren, Marie Gemes, Lee Gemes, Hayley (Ethan) Mash, Christina Gemes, Christian Gemes, and Samuel Gemes, all of Statesville, Karl (Aprille) Gemes and Kimberly Gemes, both of Troutman, Victoria Gemes of Beckley, WV, Harley Anderson of Mocksville, Eddie Gemes and Maddie Gemes, both of Lincolnton, Chase Johnson, Cole Johnson, Jake Johnson, Karyssa Torres and Brandon Torres, all of Charlotte; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Memorial service celebrating Eddy’s life will be held at 4:00 PM Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Beulah Heights Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Trent Patterson and the Rev. Tim Stutts officiating.
The family will speak with friends at the church immediately following the service.
