Luther was born on the 13th of March 1936 in Amarillo, Texas. During the early years of his life, he was raised on a family ranch in the Texas Panhandle. He attended school in Amarillo. Upon graduating from high school, he served in the United States Marine Corps. After serving overseas, he returned to Amarillo, where he attended Amarillo College and West Texas State University. He went to work for the City of Amarillo Engineering Department and subsequently worked as a City Fire Marshall in the Fire Prevention Department.
In 1960, Luther and his young family moved to Houston, where he joined the insurance firm, Cravens Dargan & Company, where he was employed for 10 years. In 1970, he was employed by Highlands Insurance Companies/Underwriters Special Risk, where he served as Senior Vice President and President respectively.
In 1980, Luther founded Resource Insurance Services, Inc. serving as President and Chief Executive Officer. Operating as a Lloyd’s of London Coverholder and Managing General Agency, specializing in Insurance and Risk Management for the Oil & Gas and Maritime Industries. In 1987, Resource was acquired by Sedgwick Group London.
Luther was an Underwriting Member at Lloyd’s; a member of the Maritime Law Association; Houston Mariners Club; Veterans of Foreign Wars Golding Meadows Post 1475; and the Gulf Coast Conservation Association.
Luther was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing with family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his sons and these pursuits.
Luther was preceded in death by his parents, James Gordon Fuqua and Henrietta Clark Fuqua. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Fuqua; sons, Myles Fuqua and his wife Andrea, and Scott Fuqua and his wife Danelle; and his grandchildren, Meggan, Jacob, Cameron and Alexandria. He is also survived by his brother, James Fuqua and his wife Fredna and their family.
A memorial service celebrating Luther’s life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 12th of September, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where Dr. Scott Rambo, Senior Pastor of Bridge Fellowship in Sugar Land, and the Rev. Winston Rice, Assisting Rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Covington, LA., are to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent grand foyer.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests, with gratitude, that memorial contribution’s in Luther’s name be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project, 2200 Space Park Drive, Ste. 100, Houston, TX, 77058; or to the charity of one’s choice.
