Cornelia (Mobberly) Tuomi, 94, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family following a brief illness. Memorial services will be 12 p.m. Thursday, September 12 at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time. A private family interment will be at Resthaven Cemetery at a later date.
Connie was born June 6, 1919 in Amarillo, TX and she attended Texas University for Women Business College. Connie worked in Washington D.C. for a year before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard (SPARS), serving two years and three months during WWII. While stationed in New Orleans she met her future husband of 57 years, on a blind date, a captain in the Army, Eino. They moved to the Des Moines area after the war where Connie was a mom to her three children and worked in the WDM School District. She was a member of Rebecca’s Circle Women’s Club, WDM Lionesses, YMCA exercise class, and several bridge clubs. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and being with friends and family. Connie was always willing to volunteer and was kind and generous to everyone. She was adored by all her family.
Connie is survived by her daughter, Barbara Lyons; son, Stephen (Lorraine); three grandchildren, Shannon (Bill) Davis, Kimberly Hutchins and Samuel (Chris) Pace-Tuomi; two-step grandchildren, Kimberly McDonald, Amanda Morris, five great-grandchildren, Alysia (Scott) Brueck, Joshua Hutchins, Delia, Zoe, Tabitha Sanburg; eight step-great grandchildren, Nathaniel, Garth and Krista Rose McDonald, Julie Anne and Evan Morris, Billie Jr., Dalton and Emily Davis; three great-great grandchildren, Gracie, Michael and Evelyn Brueck; and sister, Mary Newgent.
She was preceded in death by her husband and son, Bert.
