Mr. Vollmer was born October 2, 1935 in St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Leo Albert and Agnes Frank Vollmer.
Mr. Vollmer was a highly decorated Airforce/Army Veteran who proudly served his country for thirty years during the Vietnam War and the Korean Conflict as an aircraft mechanic. After retiring from the military, Mr. Vollmer spent his time as a self-employed automobile mechanic restoring old jeeps. He was an active member of the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation, a foundation that is dedicated to the acquisition, restoration, and maintenance of historic flyable Army Aviation aircraft. He was of the Catholic Faith and member of The Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spending his spare time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He and his wife of 35 years, Vera Vollmer thoroughly loved traveling and going on cruises to far away destinations such as Alaska. He was an avid music buff who enjoyed listening to some of the great musicians, John Denver, Jimmy Buffet and Paul Simon.
Mr. Vollmer is preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Vollmer; sisters, Sally Husband and Betty Goad.
Survivors include his wife, Vera Vollmer; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sylvia Vollmer of Boiling Springs, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Monica and Rory Stump of Atlanta; step-son, Jimmy Hogland of Cartersville; sister, Evelyn McCallister of California, brothers and sisters-in-laws, Terry and Carol Vollmer of Castillian Springs, TN and Denny and Delores Vollmer of North Carolina; grandchildren, Brandon and Amber Stump of Macon, Leo, Lila and Luisa Vollmer, all of Boiling Springs, SC, and Shelby and Kody Hogland of Cartersville; great grandchildren, Connor Malautea and Colton Yielding, both of Macon.
Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM, Saturday, September 14, 2013 in the Chapel of Owen Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenny Jacobs officiating. Interment will immediately follow from Providence Cemetery with full military honors.
Serving as pallbearers are Gary Vollmer, Leo Vollmer, Rory Stump, Brandon Stump, Jimmy Hogland, Kody Hogland, Chris Olivero and Tuck Middlebrook.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Kirk Hartley, John Akin and members of the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation.
The family will receive friends 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM Saturday, September 14, 2013 from Owen Funeral Home.
