September 10, 1929 - September 16, 2013
In celebration of the life of Lila Faye Herbert.
Lila Faye Herbert died September 16, 2013 surrounded by her family after a heroic battle against cancer. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend to many.
Born on September 10, 1929 in Chicago, IL to Sarah “Susie” and Samuel M. Ellman, Lila lived with her three sisters, Gloria, Judith and Caryl. Lila graduated from Michigan State University and quickly became a much admired and successful second grade teacher.
Lila married the love of her life Ira C. “Ike” Herbert in 1949 and worked side by side with him to build a loving home for her three children, Carrie, Jeff, and Fred. They danced together at their children’s weddings to Andy, Helen and Amie, respectively.
Lila’s heart was broken on March 4, 1995 when Ike passed away. While loved and surrounded by friends and family, she never recovered from the loss. Still she found great joy in her nine grandchildren: Drew and Blair; Sarah, Caroline, Jack, and Allison; and Carly, Ian and Chase, as well as numerous nieces, and nephews.
Lila’s greatest gifts were her kindness, loving nature and fierce loyalty to her family. We all miss her terribly, finding comfort only in the chance that she may, at last, have been reunited with Ike.
Lila, we love you with all our hearts and miss you. We are in awe of the fierce battle you waged to give all of us who loved you more time to spend in your presence.
The funeral will be held on Friday, September 20, 2013 at The Temple, 1589 Peachtree St. NE. , Atlanta, GA at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the United States Holocaust Museum or the American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com
