James Connolly Neering, M.D., born February 28, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Thomas and Ellen (Connolly) Neering, passed away on September 20, 2013 at the age of 92. Jim graduated from Mt. Clemens High School in 1939 and Michigan State Normal School (now EMU) in 1943. He received his M.D. from the University of Michigan in 1945 under the government ASTP program during WWII. He was a member of Phi Ro Sigma medical fraternity. During his internship in Grand Rapids he met his wife, Joanne Barofsky. He served in the Army at Fort Dix in New Jersey. Following that, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania, completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic, and took further training at the University of Michigan. He was the Chief of Radiology at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing where he and Joanne raised their six children: Patricia, of Jersey City; David, of Nyack, NY; Mark of Sterling Heights; Amy (Peter Cornog), of Lafayette Hill, PA; Andrew (Diana), of Ann Arbor; Mary of Berwyn, PA. Jim and Joanne retired to a farm in Dansville where he fulfilled his lifelong passion for farming and gardening. He is beloved by his companion of many years Jackie Anderson. He is preceded in death by his wife Joanne and sister, Mary Ellen Lopez. Surviving to cherish his memory are his siblings; Patrick, of Rochester, MI, Thomasine (Tot) Breher, of San Diego, CA, Anne Tessaro (Edward), of Pittsburgh, PA; numerous nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
