Rene G. Bernard, age 82, of Swansea, passed away suddenly Tuesday, September 24, 2013 in Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of Alice G. (Duguay) Bernard to whom he had been married for 60 years.
Born in Worcester, a son of the late Edward and Gertrude (Melanson) Bernard, he lived in Worcester for many years before moving to Swansea in 1989. He was a graduate of Worcester Commerce High School and attended Worcester Poly Technical Institute. A Veteran of the United States Airforce, he served during the Korean Conflict as a Technical Sergeant and was stationed in Wyoming, Virginia and Morocco.
Mr. Bernard worked as an engineer at Deknatel in Fall River and prior to that at Beaver Surgical in Waltham and Morgan Construction Company in Worcester.
A member of the Knights of Columbus, he was a Fourth Degree brother and a former Grand Knight. He was a member, Chapter President, and state manager of the Holiday Rambler Recreational Vehicle Club. An avid woodworker, he enjoyed traveling east of the Mississippi in his motor coach.
Surviving in addition to his wife, two sons; Peter Bernard of Swansea, Mark Bernard and his wife Robin of Barre, MA, one brother; Leo Bernard of Worcester; three grandchildren; twin boys, Christopher and Corey Bernard and Rebecca Bernard, one great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Joyce Quillia and Ronald Bernard.
His Funeral will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 10:00AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at BIRCHCREST, 189 Gardner’s Neck Rd., Swansea, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00AM in St. Dominic’s Church 1277 G.A.R. Highway, Swansea. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Friday from 5:00 to 8:00PM. Contributions in his honor may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Burial private.
