Captain Mays Elliott Montgomery, Sr. age 92 of Fort Myers, FL, formerly of Athens and Huntsville, AL, died Sunday, September 22, 2013 in Bonita Springs, FL. The funeral service will be Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 1 p.m. at McConnell Memorial Chapel with Dusty McLemore officiating. The visitation will be Friday, September 27, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery.
Captain Montgomery was born November 30, 1920 in Vincent, AL to Peyton Hale Montgomery and Bessie Mays Montgomery. He graduated from Auburn University in 1942 where he played football and taught intramural sports. He served in World War II in General George S. Patton’s Third Army’s First Armored Division. He served in North Africa and Italy and he received a purple heart. He was president of the South Eastern Poultry and Egg Association. He was a deacon at the First Methodist Church in Athens. He was on the board of directors at Central Bank in Athens.
Survivors include his wife Sharon Montgomery of Fort Myers, FL; his four sons, Jack C. Stephenson of Birmingham, AL; Bob Montgomery of Durham, North Carolina; Elliott Montgomery of Athens, AL; and John Montgomery of St. Simmons, GA; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
