Anna Pauline Bureman, 91, passed away October 5, 2013. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO. Private graveside service.
Pauline was born on a farm near Norway, Kansas. She was the second daughter born to the late Grant Skidmore and Lottie Fike Skidmore. She was raised on a farm west of Scandia, Kansas and graduated from Scandia High School in 1940. In 1941 she entered nurses training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Concordia, Kansas, graduating as an R.N. in 1944.
On March 13, 1945 she married Sgt. John V. Bureman, USMC. They lived in San Francisco, California until the end of World War II. They moved to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1946. John was a letter carrier with the Postal Service, and Pauline worked as a nurse at several hospitals including St Joseph’s, Baptist Memorial, and Research until her retirement in 1984.
Pauline and John raised their sons in northeast Kansas City on Poplar Street until 1959 and on Highland Street in Marlborough until John’s death on Christmas Day 1992. Pauline lived in Kansas City and Raytown until she entered Assisted Living in Overland Park, Kansas.
Pauline, like her mother, was a master quilter and lives on in her crochet work, needlepoint images, rugs and quilts. She loved music ranging from Tony Bennett and Glenn Miller to opera and symphony. She was shy among strangers and devoted to family. Having no daughters of her own, she loved shopping for female grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Because she was a nurse, it was impossible for Mark, Bruce, or Bob to evade attendance at school or church. She made pies and cookies for every family event. She was a small woman of strong character. Her devotion to family will be missed. So will her pies.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 47 years, John, her half sisters, Florence Berggren and Evelyn Berggren Smith, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and in laws. She is survived by her sister Irena Fogelberg, Scandia, Kansas; her sons, Mark (Linda), Kansas City, MO; Bruce (Sue), Kansas City,MO; and Bob, Raytown, MO. She leaves grandchildren Robin Lyles (Angela) Rotonda West, FL; Leslie Sobek (Mike)Leawood, KS; Jennifer Lyles Maqsood (Alex), Overland Park, KS; John Bureman (Ingris) Manassas, VA; Stacey Bureman, Centreville, VA; Katie Averill, Centreville, VA and great-grandchildren Kyle, Elliott and Amanda Sobek; Miriam and Jasmine Maqsood; Alison, Ashleigh and Ethan Bureman ; India and Emerson Averill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, 10100 W 87th St., Suite 100, Overland Park, KS 66212 or an animal shelter of your choice.
