A long time Auburn, California resident, Alice Everitts was born October 31, 1925 in Long Beach, CA and passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 5, 2013. She was the only child of her parents, Wilfred and Christine (Haugen) Morris. She spent almost her entire youth in Long Beach, except for the year 1935, when she was critically burned and was hospitalized for many months. As a teenager, she learned that she had 24 first cousins, and large Sunday dinners became a big part of her life. Her fondest memories as a child were days at the beach. Her love of the ocean never wavered and whenever she could, she found her way to the ocean.
During WWII she worked at the Naval Base on Terminal Island during the summers, and attended UCLA after high school graduation. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, and served as their president while there. The friends she made there have remained friends for her entire life. She met her husband, Don Everitts, on a blind date while there and they were married in 1948. They remained married until his death in 2006.
She worked at several different jobs; most of them involved children. Education was always extremely important to her, and she taught History and English for many years in Sacramento and then later in Long Beach. After receiving her Master’s Degree in counseling, Alice became a school counselor with the Long Beach Unified School District. During all this time she was the proverbial “Swimmer’s Mom” taking her children to daily swim workouts after work, and swim meets on the weekend.
While living in Auburn, she was active in her Book Club, AAUW, Delta Zeta friends, St. Luke’s Episcopal and Daughters of the King. She also loved her work as a volunteer at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital, where she spent many hours helping patients and staff.
After her retirement in 1989, she and Don moved to Auburn, CA, so they could be closer to their home in Lake Tahoe. Many vacations, and eventually summers had been spent there, and being able to visit more often was wonderful for them. In their RV they could travel more freely, visiting their daughter and granddaughters in Arizona and to the ocean and redwoods on numerous trips with friends in California. During retirement Alice and Don made many exciting overseas trips with their group of friends from Lake Tahoe and were always excited before the trips, with many stories to tell when they returned. Hawaii was also a favorite destination, and she continued taking trips around the US until health prevented further travel.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Don Everitts and is survived by her daughter Donna Hunt, son Don Everitts, Jr., granddaughters Jessica Pederson (Leo) and Heather Hunt, grandson Skyler Everitts, and great-granddaughters Kaleen Hunt, Novotny Pederson and Karina Pederson.
Services will be Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Auburn, CA. The family is very grateful to Sutter Auburn Faith Hospice for the care provided to Alice in her last months of life, and in lieu of flowers, would appreciate donations to Hospice at 11775 Education Street, Suite 201, Auburn CA 95602.
