David Roy Bates went to be with our Lord October 23, 2013 at the age of 86. David was born on January 27, 1927 in Redford, MI, the son of Alonzo and Zula Bates. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He retired after many years of service as a plumber. He was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local #333. He also taught blueprinting at Lansing Community College for 15 years. David was well known for his quick wit, humor, wisdom, and his love of music. He was a musician who could play many instruments, the piano being his favorite. He was an avid golfer who accomplished 3 holes in one in his lifetime. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards and was a huge fan of the Detroit Tigers. David was preceded in death by his parents, eleven siblings and his wife, Patricia Bates. Surviving to cherish his memory are: one sister Mina (Pete) Pedersen, two daughters, Susan (Joe V.) Covello and Sandy (Brian) Childers: two sons, Stephen (Dayle) Bates and Scott (Debby) Bates; eleven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, soon to be nine, all whom Dave held close to his heart. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the funeral home.
