Born in Fall River, a son of the late Richard M. Sr. and Ruth E. (Niles) Thompson, he spent his youth in Fall River and lived in Swansea, while summering in Little Compton for many years. He was a graduate of Philips Academy, Class of 1945 and Yale University, 1949 majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
A United States Army Veteran, he served during the Korean War.
A Production Engineer for over 21 years, Mr. Thompson worked for the former Firestone Latex and Rubber Company and then Brockton Tool Company, retiring in 1986. An avid golfer, he was a member of Acoaxet Club, the “Over the Hill Gang”, Elephant Rock Beach Club and the Society of Colonial Wars of Massachusetts.
He was the Uncle of: Swansea Fire Chief Peter J. Burke and wife Joan, John A. “Jay” Burke and wife Robbie, Paul C. Burke and wife Dona, William M. Burke and wife Lucy, Michael Burke, Deborah Dodge, Melissa Vaughn and husband Richard, Andrea Bramble and husband Dwight. Also survived by sister-in-law: Elizabeth “Betty” Thompson and several cousins. He was brother of the late Richard M. Thompson, Jr. and Elizabeth T. Dodge.
His funeral will be held Monday, October 28, 2013 at 11 AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT BIRCHCREST, 189 Gardners Neck Rd.. Swansea. His family will greet friends from 10 – 11 AM in the funeral home prior to the funeral . In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor may be made to Catholic Memorial Home Restoration Fund, 2446 Highland Ave., Fall River, MA 02720. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River.
