John Fotopoulos M.D. Fellow of the American College of Radiology entered the world of Christ on Sunday October 27, at his home in Fernandina Beach, Florida with his beloved wife Marcia Ann of 37 years by his side.
John was born in Louvri, Greece May 30, 1923. He was the son of Elizabeth and Pantelis (Peter) Fotopoulos. He immigrated with his family in 1930 to Rockland, Massachusetts where he excelled in academics and athletics. In 1997 he was an Inductee to the Academic Hall of Fame at Rockland High School. In 1941 he began study at Tufts College, Medford , Massachusetts. Shortly after that he was drafted into the United States Navy and began an accelerated program at Tufts University Medical School , Boston, MA. and received his medical degree in 1947. Internship, Carney Hospital (Tufts), Boston, MA., General Resident , Mercy Hospital , Springfield, MA. where he decided to pursue his career in medicine as a radiologist combined within the practice of Academic Medicine. He loved to teach. In 1949 he began a radiology residency at University of Michigan which was to be set aside for a period due to the Korean War. He returned to the Navy 1950-1952 and served at U.S. Naval Hospital, Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina as Lieutenant (M.C.) USNR. He was proud to serve his country. Returning to U of M 1952. Completed residency and was an Instructor there 1954-1955. He had a lifelong affection for all things University of Michigan. Go Blue! Staff at Hartford (Connecticut) Hospital 1955-1960. Northwestern University Medical School 1960-1977. Associate Professor. Acting Chairman of Radiology Evanston (Illinois) 1973-1976. 1997-2007. University of Florida, College of Medicine. Professor and Chief of Gastrointestinal Radiology, University Medical Center, Jacksonville, Florida.
He was certified a Diplomate , American Board Of Radiology and had many medical society memberships throughout his career. He was highly published in the field of radiology. In his private life, he loved music and the arts, his family and he lived the American dream.
John was predeceased by his son Mark John and his brother James Peter.
In addition to his wife Marcia Ann Ihrig Fotopoulos he is survived by his daughter Kathryn Ann Fotopoulos, Peter John Fotopoulos, daughter Paula Diane (Graeme) Duckmanton, Lt. Col. Montieth Hurd Stewart, U.S.A. retired and George Teall Stewart III . Sister Maryanna (William) Floskis, Sister in law Gloria (Hill) Fotopoulos. Four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a Greek Orthodox Christian and cared deeply for his faith. He was a founding member of Sts. Peter and Paul GOC in Glenview, Illinois and a member of The St. John the Divine Church for 37 years.
Funeral services are being held at 10:30am Friday, November 1, 2013 at St. John Divine Greek Orthodox Church, Jacksonville, Florida. Rev Dr. Nicholas Louh officiating. Interment to follow at Bosque Bello Cemetery in Fernandina Beach Florida.
