SPANGLER, Keith Knowles – of Flint, age 66, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 11, 2013 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 5073 Daly Blvd., Flint, MI with Pastor Gary Beck officiating. Burial at Crestwood Cemetery. Visitation 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, MI. and at church from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may direct memorial contributions to St. Mark Lutheran Church. Keith was born October 20, 1947 in Goodrich, Michigan to Geraldine (Stoddard) and Jack Spangler. He married Janet Marie Newman (Burk) on September 12, 1981 in Flint, MI and has been devoted to her for the past 32 years. Keith is a 1965 graduate of Hamady High School. He furthered his studies at Michigan State University “Go Spartans” where he received a B.S. in Microbiology in 1977. Keith worked for GM for 39 years. He started his career on the assembly line and rose to the position of tool maker where he enjoyed working for over 20 years. Keith was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting, golfing and almost anything else that involved being outdoors. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his sons, family and friends at “Deer Camp”, a Spangler family tradition. Keith was a Vietnam veteran and saw 9 months of combat service with “D” Troop 17th Cavalry. He obtained the rank of Sergeant and served as a gunner and later commander of an M113 armored personnel carrier. Prior to his overseas service Keith served as a drill instructor at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service & Campaign medals and the Combat Infantryman Badge for his service. In addition to his wife, Keith is survived by: six sons, Anthony (DeAnna) Spangler, Christopher (Jennifer) Newman, Richard (Nicole) Spangler, Chad Newman, Andrew (Angela) Spangler, Brandon (Jessica) Spangler; 1 daughter, Theresa (David) Gersenson; 14 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; brothers, Bruce (Peggy) Spangler, and Chris Spangler. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Darcy Spangler. The family wishes to express a very special thank you to the Hospice of Michigan, especially Carrie and Becky.
