Marvin D. Kilgore, 67, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away Friday, December 6, 2013 at Victory Hills Senior Living Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 14th at the Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas, with a Repass following the service. Inurnment with military honors will be Monday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m. in Leavenworth National Cemetery. The family requests that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
Marvin was born April 10, 1946 in Clearview, Oklahoma, but moved to Kansas City, Kansas at an early age, graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1964. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, and upon his discharge, lived in Saint Paul, Minnesota for a few years, before moving to Buffalo, New York for a short time. He then moved to New York City, where he earned both his Bachelor’s Degree and his Master’s Degree from New York University, and where he lived most of his life. In 1994, Marvin moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he lived until he returned to Kansas City last year.
He was a member of Saint John African American Methodist Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was a founding member and Corresponding Secretary of the male Chorus, the Chaplain for The Lay Ministry, a member of the Food Ministry, the Usher Board, and the Grief Support Group. Marvin worked in administration at the United States Postal Service for over 30 years, where he retired as a Manager in early 1990’s. He was a member of The Administrative Postal Workers’ Union, routinely served as an Election Judge in both New York and Birmingham, enjoyed attending and helping at church, and he also enjoyed traveling and watching sports.
Survivors include his brother, Eugene Norton & wife, Trudy of Merrillville, Indiana; 3 sisters, Beverly & husband Louis Scroggins of Kansas City, Kansas, Yvetta Sutton of Mount Juliet, Tennessee, and Gail & husband Eddie Jones of Kansas City, Kansas; Godson, Tyler DuPass; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
