Jerome F. "Jerry" Wolfson, 94, passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013 at the Regency.
He was born July 24, 1919 in Springfield the son of Henry and Bessie Rich Wolfson. He married Muriel Levy in Chicago in 1943. They met at the University of Illinois and started dating when Muriel's roommate who had been dating him, gladly gave him up. He and his bride had been married almost 70 years at the time of her death in 2012, despite her mother saying it would never last. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, a sister; Dorothy Wolfson and two brothers; Milton and Lee Wolfson.
Jerome was a product of Springfield schools; Dubois, Springfield High and Springfield Junior college. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a law degree.
Upon graduating from law school, the country entered into World War II and so did he. Within a week of getting married, he and his unit were shipped out and he was gone for three years. He served as a captain in Allied Military Government in Northern Africa and throughout Europe. After being discharged at the end of the war, he entered the family-owned Wolfson Furniture Company with his mother and two brothers. He practiced law in the office of Senator George Drach until he went into his own private practice.
Jerome was a life member of Temple B'rith Sholom. A member of B'nai Brith, the State Bar Association and the Sangamon county Bar Association, Illinois State Museum Society, MOAA and the Saturday Night Dance club. Jerome and Muriel had been dancing together since college and they were great fun to watch. They danced like Fred and Ginger. He also painted, welded small metal statues and if something needed fixing, he was the guy you called.
Jerome had a wonderful sense of humor. Up until the end, Muriel thought he was funny. "If your wife still thinks you're funny after 70 years, you have a pretty terrific marriage".
He is survived by his daughters; Judy Burnette of Springfield, and Lori (husband Louis) Newman of Arlington Heights, three grandchildren; Evan Burnette, Shayna Newman Frick (husband Matthew) and Kyle (wife Michelle) Newman, as well as his granddog, Larry L. Burnette who loved him a lot, and grandkitties. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to a charity of your choice.
