She was born on May 4, 1930 in Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland, the daughter of Patrick and Mary O'Sullivan.
Sheila came to the United States in 1950. She settled in Old Lyme in 1951 and married John H. Appleby Jr. on October 29, 1955. Mr. Appleby passed away on March 29, 2003. For many years she was employed in the hotel management field. Her last position was the owner and operator of the Appletree Restaurant in Essex.
She is survived by her daughters Mary Naehring of Old Lyme and Jacqueline and her husband Gordon Young of Oak Hill, VA; her sons William and his wife Caren Appleby of Clinton, Michael Appleby of Old Lyme, and Charles and his wife Jacqueline Appleby of Old Saybrook; her grandchildren, John and Kim Naehring; Charles Jr., Thomas, Brendan and Tyler Appleby; Caroline and Cooper Young. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her siblings Donald, Murty, Eileen, and Sr. Mary O'Sullivan, Bridget Long, and Elizabeth Kiernan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday December 28th at 10am in Christ The King Church, McCurdy Rd., Old Lyme. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 26th, from 6pm - 8pm at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith La., Old Lyme. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in her memory may be made to Old Lyme Ambulance Association; Visiting Nurses of the Lower Valley or St Bernard's Endowment Fund.
